Thank you for all the well wishes over the last month. Here’s what happened to my book series and an update on my publisher situation.
My debut YA, CONSIDER, came out with Jolly Fish Press in April 2016. The sequel, CONTRIBUTE, was set to release in Spring 2017.
CONSIDER received a starred review in SLJ, and many who read it said they couldn’t wait for the sequel. Unfortunately, Jolly Fish Press didn’t have the finances to keep it in stock.
Then on October 17, 2016, Jolly Fish Press closed suddenly. See Bustle.com article on their abrupt closing.
I was in shock. As a debut author without an agent, I wasn’t sure what to do. All rights were being returned to me. I had to start over. In most cases once a book has already been published, no other publisher will take on the title. I knew this, and I had a two-book series to worry about.
So I wallowed. Then I asked for help.
And holy crap did I get it!
I received an outpouring of support from writers I’ve met at NE-SCBWI conferences, through the Monthly Twitter Writing Challenges, The Sweet Sixteen debut group, and on social media. Advice, well wishes, referrals, even a query letter written for me. To all the writers and friends out there who helped me when I was at a super low point, know I am forever grateful.
Within 48 hours after Jolly Fish Press closed, I had offers. I was overwhelmed and couldn’t field it myself. I couldn’t even wrap my brain around what was happening. I needed an agent. I ended up signing with the fabulous Kathleen Rushall of the Andrea Brown Literary Agency a week later. She has been an absolute godsend.
To make a complicated situation even more complicated, then Jolly Fish Press put out a revised public statement that they were not closing. On October 31, 2016 North Star Editions acquired Jolly Fish Press. See Publisher’s Weekly article. Jolly Fish Press is now an imprint under NSE’s ownership. The rights for my series were automatically transferred in the sale.
My agent and I discussed my situation with NSE, and after long emails and conversations, I’ve decided to stay with their Jolly Fish Press imprint under the new owner and new management. They are fully invested and enthusiastic to work with me. CONSIDER will continue as published, with all backorders and store orders filled. I also get to finish editing book 2 with TJ da Roza, who has been the biggest fan of my series since the beginning.
For readers and fans of the Holo Series, CONTRIBUTE is set to release July 11, 2017. I know you’ve been waiting desperately to find out what happens to Alex and her loved ones after book 1, and I’m so happy and humble that her journey will continue. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support during this time. If it wasn’t for your early praise of CONSIDER, I wouldn’t be where I am now.
It’s time for me to get back to writing 🙂
